Let’s face it, while there are other search engines, Google has to be your prime concern if you are looking for organic search traffic. Many things affect where you sites rank in the Google SERPs but I don’t expect much argument when I say that inbound links have the most impact. Just about any link will help, but the real benefit comes from inbound links with relevant anchor text that is surrounded by relevant content on a site that Google considers relevant to where the link points on your site. And if the originating site is also trusted by Google to be an authority in your market, you have hit the jackpot. Getting lots of links is great, getting good links is better and getting an increasing number of great links over a period of time is The BEST. Easier said than done, right? We have all read that little value is placed on reciprocal links these days. In some ways that is a good thing as it discourages webmasters from filling their sites with irrelevant links that reduce the value of the visitor experience. In other ways it is a bad thing, especially for those who have only started marketing their online business more recently. All they are told is that reciprocal links are a waste of time, so they don’t bother pursuing them. Big mistake! If you have been around for a while, you will almost certainly have had similar experiences to the following. You approached another website that has complementary, but non-competing content, and ask to exchange links. During the course of your correspondence, it comes to light that you both have newsletters with a reasonable number of subscribers interested in the same general topic. Long story short, many successful joint ventures have resulted from a simple link exchange request. But there is no getting away from it, these days it is much harder. I am not putting down automated systems that are designed to get you non-reciprocated inbound links. I have seen the results and they often are quite effective, but it’s a numbers game. If you get 250 links in to your site, it will certainly do no harm. The only problem is lack of control. You have to take the links you are given and that is it. Also, all these automated systems want something in return. Either you must allow random posts to be made to your blog, or you must link from your home page to a script that generates outbound links from your site. In both cases you have no control over where those links are going. If a site you link to goes bad, i.e. banned by Google, and you get spidered before the offending site is removed from the system, you could suffer badly. Hopefully this would be unlikely, but wouldn’t you prefer to regain a little more control over where you are linking out to? Now you can. Some of you are probably doing this already and, if you are, you know how much work can be involved in hunting down suitable link partners. All I’m doing is making it a lot easier for you to find the right sites to partner with. A heck of a lot easier! How would you like to log in to a site where the members are offering ONE-WAY LINKS to each other in just about every market and niche you can imagine? Well, that is what I have created for you. How does it work? It can work when both parties have only one site, however, it works better if one party has two sites, one for the outbound link, and the other for the inbound link. It works best if both parties have two sites. See the diagram below.
If both parties only have one site then the content that contains the links must be high quality e.g. an article of at least 250 words, and it should not be on the same page as any other outbound links. Most importantly, the pages should not link to each other but to different landing pages on the other party’s site. The system is simple. Members post offers to swap links with other members. Each offer is listed in a categorized, searchable database and contains information about the outbound and inbound URL involved in the swap. Ideally both should be on a similar theme in order to attract the most responses from other members. The offer also contains the content that the responder needs to place on their site. This can be anything from a simple URL with anchor text to a full article with links embedded. Obviously if you put an excessive amount of links in your article, nobody will want to use it on their site. A good balance would be to include a link to one of your internal pages within the body of the article and a link to your home page at the end. The important thing that the system gives you is control. You have complete control of the content that links to your site and also where that content is placed. There is no limit on the number of offers that can be posted by members. The only limit on the number of members that you exchange links with under any given offer is self-imposed. If you feel you have enough links to a certain page you can suspend the offer. Also, you can change the inbound content as often as you like so that the anchor text, or article it is embedded in, is not duplicated too often, if at all. I cannot see into the future (and I do not work for Google) but I am confident that I can state, without any doubt in my mind, that YOU WILL NEVER BE PENALISED BY GOOGLE (OR ANY OTHER SEARCH ENGINE) for providing quality original content, linking to more quality content on the same theme or being linked to by related sites from within highly relevant content.
